Spinal and discus hernia
The recurrent or chronic pain in the neck, back and waist is most often caused by degenerative diseases of the spine (which may be cause by some injury or ageing itself), or static abnormalities of the spine.
Each disc is made up of a stronger outer and a softer inner part. The soft part provides flexibility and loadibility for the spine. If the disc degenerate, the softer inner part may portrude or break through the hard outer layer. This part of the damaged disc may squeeze, irritate, or even hurt the nerve roots.
The patient will feel pain, muscle weakness or numbness in various parts of the body (neck, back, waist, limbs), or will one of their limbs become numb, depending on where the split of the disc occured. While muscle weakness, numbness, and insensitivits primarily affect one of the limbs, the pain will not only appear around the neck, back or waist, but also radiate along the sciatic nerve.
The doctor will decide what therapy is really needed, based on the diagnosis. In determining that, clarifying symptoms and medical history (when the pain began, circumstances of its appearance, its location and strength, whether it can be provoked, radiation) is very important, as well as whether the patient will talk about numbness, sensory disorder or muscle weakness.
Spinal hernia will in in more moderate cases recede, and the complaints will then also stop. That is why doctors do not recommend operation to the majority of patients. Patient and complex treatmet, led by the doctor, is in most cases efficient and risk-free.
The LOTUS MEDICAL CENTER specializes in the conservative treatment and rehabilitation of patients suffering from spinal hernia. We recommend 7 to 10 days of treatment for spinal hernia that has not been operated on, and 14 days of intensive treatment at the clinic after operation.
